Virtual Visits

This summer, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Oakmont Construction were unable to welcome students to their sites as they normally would, due the need to restrict site visitors to essential persons only.

However, at our Union scheme at Stockley Park in Uxbridge, Site Manager Greg King came up with the idea of using video conferencing to offer a Virtual Site Visit Experience.

Greg reached out to Uxbridge College and was able to arrange a great virtual visit for their construction students.  Greg walked students through the site, explaining what could be seen, and the progress that was being made on site, as he went.  Greg was also able to answer questions on the day.

The students found it a valuable way of seeing a live site and, with it also being recorded, they are able to refer back to it at a later date.  One student said of the experience; “It was very intriguing to see behind the scenes of the construction process.  Since I’m aiming to pursue architecture it enabled me to understand the procedure and planning that goes into it a bit more and I would appreciate future tours like this.”.

Since the success of the virtual site visit Oakmont Construction are looking for opportunities to offer the experience of other colleges on other schemes.  Additionally, the initiative was featured on the Considerate Constructors Scheme Best Practice Hub so other contractors can learn form Oakmont’s example.
